19 MEASUREMENT UNCERTAINTY Overview This chapter discusses the evaluation and reporting of measurement uncertainty. Laboratory measurements always involve uncertainty, which must be considered when analytical results are used as part of a basis for making decisions. 1. Every measured result reported by a laboratory. In quantum mechanics, the uncertainty principle (also known as Heisenberg's uncertainty principle) is any of a variety of mathematical inequalities asserting a fundamental limit to the precision with which the values for certain pairs of physical quantities of a particle, such as position, x, and momentum, p, can be predicted from initial conditions.

After de Broglie proposed the wave nature of matter, many physicists, including Schrödinger and Heisenberg, explored the consequences. The idea quickly emerged that, because of its wave character, a particle’s trajectory and destination cannot be precisely predicted for each particle r, each particle goes to a definite place (as illustrated in Figure ).   Unit 1 – Physical Quantities and Measurements Last Update: 04/17/ Physical Quantities and Units. We define a physical quantity either by specifying how it is measured or by stating how it is calculated from other measurements. For example, we define distance and time by specifying methods for measuring them, whereas we define average speed by stating that it is calculated as Author: keramati.

All measurements are subject to uncertainty, and a measurement result is complete only when it is accompanied by a statement of the associated uncertainty. It applies to predictions of future events, to physical measurements that have already been made, and to the unknown.
